Pre Shot Sequence
Much has been talked and written about the importance of a good Pre Shot Sequence. A few weeks ago I wrote about the importance of doing the 'pre shot routine' with full awareness in my Golf Strategy Email Series. I don't want it to be 'routine', so I'm going to call it a sequence from now on. I have I have had a big response from that article, with most people wanting to know what my pre shot sequence is, and how it works in my game.
The Pre Shot Sequence is something I have had trouble with over the years. I freely admit I am not the most mentally disciplined person, which may account for the inconsistency of my results. I think the main reason I have struggled, is that it is impossible to separate the mental side of the game from the physical, and I have been very caught up in technique in the past, which makes it very difficult to get a settled mental process in place and stick to it. Nowadays I'm much more sure of the technical side of what I'm doing, so going through a consistent mental sequence is much easier.
I make all the calculations to do with the shot before the club even comes out of the bag. This means assessing the lie, the yardage, the wind etc. This process is actually pretty straight forward and is easier with a clear strategy and some clear thinking. The main thing is to be 100% committed to the shot you have chosen once the club comes out of the bag. There's nothing worse than stepping up to a shot with unreconciled doubts still in your mind. If you don't believe in the shot you have chosen, put the club away and choose a shot you can believe in.
