Putting

There is nothing that will improve your scores quicker than holing some putts.  Conversely, there is nothing more frustrating than hitting the ball well tee to green, then not being able to get the ball in the hole.  It is very tempting to try to turn putting into a science. Just like the long game there are certain fundamentals that will make a big difference in whether you hole putts or not, but I like to think of putting as an art.  Feel, distance control, green reading and thinking properly are at least as important as having a perfect stroke.

Improve Your Putting

Putting on the 7th green, Marquis Course

I love putting, and I love teaching people to putt.  As the old saying goes, 'A man who can putt is a match for anyone.'  If you are a good putter, and you think you are a good putter, then it takes a lot of pressure off the rest of your game.  On the days you are hitting the ball well, you can take advantage to shoot a really low score, and on the days you aren't hitting the ball well you can save your score on the greens.

It is really rewarding to help someone who has been really struggling to get the ball in the hole, and in a pretty short time have them looking forward to getting on to the green, rather than dreading it as they had been in the past.

Putting Grip

Putting GripI coach putting in the same way as I coach the rest of the game.  I keep it as simple as possible, and I try to let the body work naturally, rather than fighting against it.  As with the rest of the game there are a few basic fundamentals that are the foundations of a good stroke, and these fundamentals are what I spend most of the time helping people with.

A good putting grip, (which is very different to a conventional full swing grip), a good setup, and a basic understanding of the way the putter moves is all you need to be a really good putter, and to transform your game on the greens.

The main thing to understand about the putting grip
is that is very different from the grip used to hold the club for hitting a full shot.  If you are using the same grip to hold your putter as you do for the rest of your clubs then this is probably causing you problems.  The main thing we are looking for on the greens is touch and feel, rather than power.  The hands also work in a different way in the putting stroke than they do for any other shot.  This means we need to arrange them on the handle of the club in a different way in order to be effective.  The putting grip can be summed up with two words; 'lifelines' and 'fingertips.'
