The Biomechanics of the Golf Swing

These video's are from a seminar by Alison Theitje, of Motion Memory for Golf.  They are the basis around which the Rotary Swing Tour programme is built.  They give a fantastic introduction to the biomechanics of the golf swing, and explain why the golf swing has been such a difficult movement to learn and teach in the past.  (If you are short of time, the first 4 and the last one are the most relevant.)

Junior Golf Lessons

I have recently taken over the coaching of the Junior Group classes at Collingtree Park.  This is a great honour and a responsibility I take very seriously.  The chance to help children develop a love for the game, and to help them establish good basic skills is a fantastic opportunity, and coaching young golfers is something I really enjoy.

Safety is a key concern when coaching anyone, but especially children.  At the start of every lesson we emphasise that staying safe is the most important part of everyone enjoying the lesson.  I have have completed the UK Sports Coaching Child Protection Course, and have a full CRB check.

From a technical point of view, the objectives are the same when coaching children are the same as when coaching anyone.  If the young golfer can get a good grasp of the basics, of the grip, of the posture and of balance and rotation, then they will soon be hitting fantastic golf shots and enjoying all the fun and challenges that the game has to offer.

In the group lessons we focus very much on the basics, in a way which makes the learning fun and exciting. Once the basic skills have been acquired, we cover all areas of the game including basic golf fitness and body awareness, the setup and golf swing, the short game, putting, and then taking it all into a game situation.

I will be running Junior classes throughout the year.  If you would like your child to get involved, whether or not they have ever played the game before then please get in touch either by calling 07976 401 545, or via the Contact Page.

Golf Lesson - Holding the Golf Club

Holding the golf club correctly is perhaps the most important fundamental in building a sound, repeatable golf swing.  The grip is the only connection with the club, the implement with which we strike the golf ball, and so is of crucial importance to the rest of the process.  If this seems to be a very detailed description of the grip, it is because it is such an important fundamental.  I see so many golfers who have little or no understanding of the correct way to grip the club, and what effect an incorrect grip will have on their whole game.

I hope you can follow these instructions. It will make more sense if you have a golf club in your hands as you read them.  If you have any questions, please get in touch via the Contacts page. (For left handed players, apologies, but for clarity I haven't included opposite handed instructions in the text. Please swap left for right and right for left.)

Golf Lesson - Left Hand Grip

To get the left hand on the club correctly, I like to use the following routine:

Hold the club up in front of you in your right hand
, on the shaft somewhere near the shaft label.  The club should be tilting away from you at 45 degrees and out to the right at approx 45 degrees, (pointing north east) with the leading edge of the clubhead vertical.

Golf Lesson - Right Hand Grip

Holding the club in front of you again, slide the right hand down so the club sits in the middle joints of the fingers of the right hand.  When you close the hand, the lifeline of the right hand is pressed on top of the left thumb.
