Books

Books are a key source of information and inspiration.  If I am ever struggling for motivation to go out and practice, reading one of my favourite books is often a way for me to get my enthusiasm back.

There is very little that is new in the game of golf, and most things have been written about in great detail and often by a number of different authors.  Often the problem with reading golf books can be too much information, leading to too many thoughts and an over complication of what is a simple movement.  Read and enjoy by all means, but don't get too hung up on the details.  It is a movement that needs to be felt and experienced, rather than put into words and analysed.

The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle

Without wanting to sound evangelical, this is the book that changed everything for me, and not just my golf.  Before I read this book, I had times when nothing made sense.  After I had read it, everything started to make sense.  I had read a lot of golf psychology books, but on many levels they just deal with the symptoms, rather than the cause.  This gets right to the core of how we think and why we do what we do.  I now understand the underlying reasons why I haven't performed in certain situations in the past, and how I can improve in the future.  Reading this book makes the the other golf psychology books more easily understood and applied in real life

Golf's Three Noble Truths - James Ragonnet

Golfs Three Noble Truths - The Fine Art of Playing Awake, by James Ragonnet.  I really enjoyed this book. It forced me to really think about why I play the game, and how I play it. Particularly at a time when I was getting very caught up in swing theory and technical stuff, I found it very helpful.

The Rotary Swing - Chuck Quinton

The Rotary Swing, by Chuck Quinton.  This book is fantastic:  Simple, concise and easy to understand.  Chuck Quinton is probably golf teaching's best kept secret.  He has had a huge influence on my own game, and on what I teach on a daily basis through his excellent website RotarySwing.com.  He has taken Jim Hardy's concept of a One Plane swing,  powered by the body rather than the hands and arms, and simplified it to make it accessable to golfer of all ablilities.

Mastery - George Leonard

Mastery by George Leonard. I dip into this book regularly, especially when things are not going so well.  It reminds me that improvement is a continuous process, rather than a finite objective.  It also reminds me that I'll never learn everything about this game, and that I need to always look at things from the point of view of the beginner, especially when I'm helping other people learn the game.  If you like this, 'The Way of Aikido' by the same author is also a fantastic book.

The Art of Putting - Stan Utley

By Stan Utley. Putting is a very personal thing. I like to keep things as simple as possible and this book is very straightforward.   Stan Utley teaches a traditional method where the putter face stays square to the swing path, rather than the target line, with the stroke moving in an arc. I find this a much more natural way to swing the putter and my putting has been getting more and more consistent as I have got used to this stroke.
